The right material, the wrong installation: the most expensive saving

Even the finest material stops being a guarantee when it is installed without following its specification. We explain why buying the material is the easy part, and why the outcome is decided by the installation.

There is a scene we encounter more and more often in the field: a company has researched the right system, reached the right manufacturer, even purchased the right product. Then the calculation changes: “we have the material, we will do the installation with our own team, or with whichever contractor quotes the lowest price.” A few months later we meet the same company again, this time for a damage assessment. The material is the same material; the result is something else entirely.

At the heart of this scene lies a simple misconception: the idea that just as the material can be purchased, the result can be purchased too. Yet a floor coating, a waterproofing system or a strengthening solution is not a product taken off a shelf; it is a whole that is built on site. Buying the product is the easy part; what determines the result is the installation.

The specification is not a suggestion; it is the system itself

Every reputable manufacturer supplies its products together with application specifications and method statements. These documents are not a formality; they define under which conditions, with what preparation and in what sequence the system is to be built. The condition of the surface, the ambient conditions, the waiting times between layers and the detailing solutions are all parts of this whole. Every step that departs from the specification takes the finished work outside the system the manufacturer defined. On the surface, the same product has been applied; in reality, something else has been applied.

The real invoice of the seemingly cheap installation

The first invoice of an installation done without following the method arrives quickly: premature wear, delamination, recurring repairs. The real invoice is the second one. Because correcting a faulty installation is almost always more expensive than doing the job right from the start: the existing application must be removed, the surface prepared again, new material and new labor are required; and this time the production area closes for work a second time. The saving made on the installation is repaid shortly afterwards, with interest.

It is not only about budget: occupational safety

The less discussed dimension is safety. A poorly installed floor, waterproofing layer or detail is not merely an aesthetic flaw; it is a risk that enters the daily life of the operation. Deteriorating surfaces increase the likelihood of accidents in pedestrian and vehicle traffic, and a system that fails to do its job leaves you alone exactly where you need to rely on it. The installation itself also demands its own discipline: a crew not trained for this work creates risk during the application, both for itself and for the facility. Occupational safety is not a side benefit of correct installation; it is a direct reason for it.

The warranty reality: unauthorized installation, the end of the guarantee

And there is a truth most companies learn only after it is too late: manufacturer warranties are given not just to the product but to the system, and the system’s condition is clear: the installation must be carried out by authorized, trained and certified applicators, in accordance with the specification. Work carried out by unauthorized, uncertified firms is among the first situations manufacturers exclude from warranty altogether. Even if the material has been paid for in full, the company is left with no recourse for the damage caused by a faulty installation. A cheap installation does not just mean buying poor work; it means handing back the guarantee of a good material.

The right question

On the threshold of an investment, the right question does not end with “which material”; it is completed with “who will install it, with what authorization and with what discipline.” This is why we have worked as an authorized applicator for more than thirty years: what we sell is not a product but a documented, guaranteed result. If you would like to evaluate your investment with this question in mind, let’s talk.
