Passive Fire Protection

Systems that delay the spread of fire and smoke through the building, protecting compartment integrity from cable and pipe penetrations to joints.

Why passive fire protection

In a fire, time is won inside the walls.

The visible face of fire safety is the alarms and suppression systems; the invisible face is the building itself. A fire-rated wall loses its function through a single unsealed cable tray or pipe penetration passing through it; flame and smoke use the smallest gap like a corridor. Passive fire protection closes these gaps against fire and smoke, restoring the integrity of the compartment.

This is not a filling job but a systems job: the right system is selected according to the type of penetration, the fire resistance rating of the wall or slab, and the behavior of the services passing through. In our applications, every penetration is labeled together with the system used and put on record, because a firestopping application gains its full value through its auditability.

What sets this system apart
  • Compartment integrity: The designed function of the fire compartments is preserved at the penetration points.
  • A system per penetration type: The right solution for cables, pipes, ducts and joints, each in its own right.
  • Labeled, recorded handover: Every penetration is documented; traceability is provided for audits.
  • Application in live facilities: Zoned, planned application in operating facilities.
Where it is used

At every point where a fire compartment is breached.

Passive fire protection is on the agenda wherever services pass through the building’s compartments.

System cross-section

The gap is closed; the resistance rating is restored.

The gap around the penetration is closed with materials that react to fire; the system restores the compartment’s resistance rating.

  • Firestop sealantThe finish providing the seal against smoke at the surface.
  • Fire-resistant fillingThe body filling the gap and preserving its integrity under heat.
  • Service penetrationThe cable, pipe or duct that defines the system by its type.
  • Fire compartmentThe wall or slab whose resistance rating is defined in the design.
System options

A system for the type of penetration.

System selection is defined by the penetration type, the compartment’s resistance rating and the services’ behavior.
